Prompt: design a poster and an iPhone application with gamification that communicates an intended message about a social, political, or environmental issue to the viewer, maintains readability and accessibility, and contains aesthetic quality and style that is relevant to the topic.
Considerations: consider how this app can help small business owners while encouraging the public to shop small and local. Consider universality and how the user would be able to navigate through the app easily.
Final Mockups
Above are three of my final mockups, displaying the Lock app splash screen, a screen that shows home decor in the filtered location of Rochester, NY, and a screen from my trivia gamification.
Process and Ideation
Included above are some of my designed process works, including my moodboard, research, color and type ideations, user personas, and competitor analyses. Throughout my process, I considered the importance of small businesses and what they do for community, the environmental benefits of shopping locally, the experiences of small business owners and that of people who shop at small businesses. I wanted to incorporate imagery that evokes craftiness, humanity, and nature.
Low and Mid Fidelity Wireframes
Above are some screens of both my low and mid fidelity wireframes, demonstrating the progression of my screens from grayscale layouts to fully designed screens.
High Fidelity Wireframes
Here are a handful of my high fidelity wireframes. I had around 3o in total but decided to show a few that display differentiated screens like the trivia screens, checkout screens, etc.
Throughout my process of going from low to high fidelity, I explored numerous typefaces. The typeface I ultimately chose for my high fidelity wireframes is Averia Libre. I feel that this is a unique serif which is bold enough for users to easily read and it does not contain the thin lines that many serif typefaces contain, making it much more digestible.
Final Video
My final video showcases how the user would navigate through my app, from signing in to filtering by location to playing the trivia.
Final Poster & Mockup
My final poster advertisement for the Locl app includes the "download on the app store" logo so users know where they can find the app. It features an encapsulating statement, "help the planet, help the people," in a bold sans serif typeface as a catchy moto to give the viewer insight into the type of app that Locl is, as well as a brief statement of the app's purpose: "discover small businesses near you with the Locl app."
App Store Preview
I designed an app store preview of my app using a Figma template which helps give the appearance that Locl is not a fictional app but rather a real app straight from the app store. It also gives insight on the types of hypothetical reviews that the app would receive, similar apps, preview screens, etc.
